Best Laid Plans & Itinerary Changes

Sometimes in life, you need to make adjustments mid-game. That's what we're doing now that we're on the road - we're making a few itinerary changes. Don't worry, we're still traveling 30 days at a time, but we've added in a few "vacation" weeks as we'd like to call them. These are short breaks from work where we become more like tourists for a short time. Just like we would take breaks and travel if we were in the U.S. When we first started out on our grand adventures, we did not know what to expect. All we knew was that we were going to be seeing and doing some really cool things and everyone thought we were crazy for traveling the world with a toddler.

After traveling for over 100 days, we're finding out that while we are getting to see and do amazing things, it has been more difficult than anticipated. We feel incredibly lucky that we are able to see the world from a new perspective because it has been really eye-opening. You have time to let the "new & exciting" feeling subside and start to get into a groove. However, only staying in one city in each country feels a little too constricting. It's like going to Los Angeles and saying you've seen all of the U.S. The balancing act is that we still need to work so we cannot be running from place to place all of the time. Our plan is to add in a few more cities and see what feels right as we go.

Our original itinerary:

July 14, 2014 - August 18, 2014: England (Buckden & London)

August 18, 2014 - August 26, 2014: Scotland ("Vacation" week)

August 26, 2014 - September 22, 2014: Germany (Munich)

September 22, 2014 - October 22, 2014: Switzerland (Olten)

October 22, 2014 - October 26, 2014: Greece (Athens for TBEX Europe)

October 26, 2014 - November 23, 2014: Croatia (Split)

November 23, 2014 - December 20, 2014: Spain (Seville)

December 20, 2014: Back to The States for the holidays with our families

Doesn't that sound amazing? It has been pretty awesome. However, we ran into a small snag after Greece. While trying to book our flights to Croatia from Greece we just could not get it worked out easily. There were long layovers, overnight stops, several different planes. It was all a bit much to take with a toddler in tow. Then, we looked at the weather. Croatia's a summer destination and the travel industry accommodates for that. That means there are more flights, boats and options. We're really sad to miss Croatia this time around, but traveling is in our blood so we know we'll be back again.

So now where? Well, not going to Croatia creates another problem because of the Schengen Agreement. One of the nice things about the EU is the ease of travel between the member countries. However, as visitors, our stay in the Schengen Zone (which includes most of Europe, with the exception of the UK, Ireland, and a shrinking list of eastern European countries) is limited to 90 days within a 180 day period. This makes the entire planning process much more challenging.

To work around our allotted days we looked at different travel options. We could check out Turkey for a bit. Istanbul is supposed to be amazing, but we hear the weather is already turning chilly. Then there's Ireland. We had a tough decision between England and Ireland before we left. But, again the weather. Or we thought about Morocco. There's something wonderfully exotic about the idea of Morocco. It'd be a different continent with completely different tastes and sounds. It's definitely at the top of the new list.

But, we have a small confession. We're a little tired and home sick. We want to spend more time with family and let Eleanor get to know her grandparents better. So we've decided to spend 30 days in the USA. We'll be back for the Thanksgiving holiday with my family and then travel to Brett's family mid-December for Christmas. It will be interesting to see how our perspective has changed in just under 6 months.

Then, we'll get back on the road again. There's too much of this beautiful planet to explore and we put in too much work selling our stuff, organizing our lives, and putting ourselves out there to stop now. Oh yea, and it's fun!
